From Displacement to Creativity: Inside Our Cairo School

The Hands Up Project school in Cairo was first started by Donna Campbell, who planted the seeds of this special learning space during her time in Egypt. Her work laid a foundation of care, creativity, and connection that continues to grow.

Another special person who has made a big impact is Brooke. She has visited the school many times, bringing joy, kindness, and much-needed supplies to the children. Whether playing games, lending a helping hand, or simply spending time with the students, Brooke’s presence has been a source of warmth and support. Her dedication reminds us that small acts of compassion can create lasting memories and real change.

Peter Oswald visited the school for two weeks and had a truly unforgettable time. He worked closely with the students, guiding them in how to act, build characters, and bring their own plays to life. His presence brought energy and inspiration to the classroom, and the students embraced the opportunity to learn from a master of storytelling.

Now, although Peter has returned to the UK, his wife, Alice Oswald, is in Cairo continuing to support and uplift the students through creative activities and engagement. Together, their presence has added so much to the spirit of the school.

Our classes blend English learning with storytelling, theatre, music, and poetry. Whether students are writing original plays, performing traditional songs, or simply laughing through a vocabulary game, every moment is a celebration of resilience and imagination.

We’re also lucky to be supported by other passionate educators like Chris, who visits the school and teaches sessions focused on language and communication. Together, we create space for students not just to learn, but to thrive despite the circumstances they’ve faced.

At the Hands Up Project school in Cairo, education is more than lessons—it’s an act of resistance, joy, and community. We are so proud of the students who come to class ready to create, connect, and build a brighter future with every word they speak and every story they tell. Donate here
