Taiwan
Gerhard Erasmus at Inspired Kids school (now affiliated with Hands up) has done so much to make connections between our children in Palestine and children in Taiwan. See this blog post about this special connection.
He’s held poetry events, encouraged kids at his school to participate in our poetry competition, remote theatre courses and other summer courses, and provided masses of emotional and other support to our teachers and children experiencing hell on earth right now in Gaza.
We’re very grateful to you for that Gerhard.

Mechthild Lier joined us in 2023 for the daily ceasefire vigils. In 2024, she started as a HUP volunteer in link-ups with Aida Basic Boys’ School in the West Bank. In the first link-up year, the boys joined from their homes, in the second year they have been joining as a whole class. Mechthild loves the truly international cooperation with the Palestinian teacher on the ground (Sofia Ramadan, later Samya Um Ahmad) and co-volunteer Gopika Gopakumar (India / UK). Additionally, she volunteered in the HUP poetry course run by Alice and Peter Oswald and in the conversation course led by Manuela Kelly Calzini. She also likes to spread the word about Palestine and the HUP in Germany. (ELTA-Rhine Newsletter 02/24)

Belfast
We met Paul Woods, a teacher at St Louise’s school, and other members of INTO, the Irish teachers’ Union, in Belfast when we were there for the IATEFL conference in the Spring of 2022 and they invited us back there in the Autumn of 2022 to host Rahaf, Malak and Yara (from Gaza) and Julia and Magdalena (from Czechia) – the winners of our 2021 Intercultural Remote theatre competition. The girls hadn’t met each other face to face before, and neither had their teachers – Rinan and Jasmina - but they all came together at St Louise’s to put on this amazing live performance of ‘Welcome to Earth’, a play which had originally only been performed remotely, in the school hall. The production involved the school’s choir, dance, drama and art departments and was preceded by this performance of ‘We will wait until they open the gate’ by EAL learners from St Louise’s. Both plays were performed in front of a hugely appreciative audience of parents, pupils and teachers. Since the genocide started we are so grateful for the ongoing support and care for Rahaf, Malak, Yara and Rinan by Paul by Paul, Mairead and Sophie and all the staff and pupils of St Louise’s.

Cuba
Cuba
It’s not easy to do link ups Between Palestine and Cuba because the internet is very weak in schools there, and also because Cuba is 7 hours behind Palestine. However our volunteer, Sue Piper has visited and taken some of our poetry and play books to donate to schools there, and Cuban teacher educator, IsoraEnriquez OFrarrill has done a lot of solidarity work with Cuban children drawing pictures for our children in Palestine. See here for example about this great work. Nick will be going to Cuba in early May 2025 – partly to have a much needed holiday, but also to do some work there in strengthening our connections between schools in Cuba and schools in Palestine.

Fatima Aldajani first learned about The Hands Up Project in 2023 when she came across a Hands up storytelling session shared on social media. Inspired by the work, she immediately reached out to Nick to express her interest in becoming a volunteer. Since then, she has been actively supporting the project in various capacities including linking, archiving materials etc. On April 5, 2025, she organized the first Moon Tell Me Truth exhibition in Toledo, Ohio, showcasing the creative work of students in Palestine and honouring the memory of those who have lost their lives. Looking ahead, Dr. Fatima Aldajani plans to present The Hands Up Project at the 2026 conference in Utah, further highlighting its importance in storytelling and education.

A brilliant young storyteller from Nepal called Reevan Kunwor and Shubham Kunwor used to participate in the world storytelling sessions David Heathfield ran at the beginning of the pandemic. But our connection to Nepal goes back further. Nick was very inspired by a session at the IATEFL conference in 2016 by a Nepalese teacher called Gobinda Puri. From Gobinda’s workshop came the idea of encouraging students to create plays about social issues as a language learning activity. This has become a staple of our work.

We've also brought two groups of students from Gaza to perform their winning plays in theatres here. Here's a BBC report about the first time we did this>> YouTube
